Problem: Making CDs functionally beautiful to display & use.
Solution: ‘CD ends’ that allow for the existing behaviour of ‘flicking through’ a collection.

The Brief

A music loving friend of mine was remodelling his living room, reducing the amount of cupboards and increasing open shelving, however, he was unable to find a suitably beautiful way to display his CD collection.

The Approach

In considering the display of CD’s on a shelf I realised there is one habitual action that no existing racks allow for, the flicking through of the CD’s to chose what to play. This action is one naturally performed in record shops as well as when CD’s are stored in any kind of hidden drawer or cupboard space. It is an action that is inherently normalised, understood, and necessary that no existing product allows for.

The Flick CD end, firstly allows for an unlimited number of CD’s: given people’s varied collections it seems ridiculous to limit them to a pre-defined number of CD spaces. Secondly, the form allows you to ‘flick’ the end itself in order to drop the CD’s from upright to angled thus allowing you to flick through them quickly, before flicking the end back up to set the collection back upright.
